Life imitates XKCD yet again

So we were discussing at work how when some of the non programmers where I work were handing some stuff out by breaking the line up by first name at the lunch table, which led to the problem where J-K had a long line (because it had a disproportionate number of names among Americans, as well as among other cultures.

And we spent a lot of effort talking about this. Finally, it occurred to me that this was the sort of problem that one might write on a board and go nerd sniping with.

Which, of course, is an XKCD strip, but neither of the two people I was lunching with had seen the particular strip, so I had to explain the strip. And when I got to the problem in the strip, immediately Evan's brain fixated on it.

We pointed out, after about 30 seconds of consideration, that Evan would have been run over by a truck and that he was being nerd sniped again. Which, of course, given the geek mentality, didn't snap him out of the problem, so he had to go back to his cube and retrieve an old college textbook and show us the equations behind the solution.

Eventually, in Evan's defense, I pointed out that it was really not necessary to be immune to solving the problem. Really, you just needed to solve it before the truck ran you over.
