My personal thoughts on my life as a nerd

Peter Pan syndrome and casual shoes 2009-04-04 03:30PM
or... how I'm mentally preparing myself for the trip to the shoe store, because I have to.
It's actually hard for me to boycot big companies these days... 2009-04-02 11:10AM
Remember the whole Michael Phelps thing, where Kellogg dropped his mug from Wheaties because he got photographed smoking pot? You know how everybody went all gonzo on boycotting Kellogg for dropping a man for a "victimless crime"? Well, I kinda wanted to counter-boycott them by eating more Kellogg products, just because I know that if Michael Phelps had been caught doing a variety of alternative things that might annoy other people, even if they were not presently illegal, that he'd still get dropped.
15 years or so 2009-03-27 12:47AM
It's been maybe 15 years or so since I've had a glass of Coke or Pepsi or Dr. Pepper or 7-Up or Sprite or most other sodas. The only one I can really summon a taste-memory of anymore is Dr. Pepper and 7-Up/Sprite. I can't even remember what Coke or Pepsi tasted like.
Some silly workplace stories 2009-03-23 01:20AM
"hold on. I just got into the geekroom. Let me take a hit off the soldering flux and then I'll save the world in record time."
I hate Complex magazine 2009-02-13 12:34AM
You know, I think the most offensive thing possible is when a magazine has such a hard on about keeping their readership numbers up in a valuable demographic that, while they charge for their magazine, it's actually quite hard to get them to stop sending the stupid piece of crap...
My opinion on the stuck-in-development-hell Neuromancer movie 2009-02-12 11:32AM
A Neuromancer movie has been in development hell since the eighties. My opinion on how you'd do it has stayed fixed for quite a few years now, so I figured I'd write it out so that every time people make noises about it, I can dig up this post and be saved making the argument over and over again...
The story of how I came to buy a UPS without budgeting for it 2008-12-16 10:39AM
I guess I should have known there would be cosmic consequences from putting off buying a UPS until next month..
Everybody makes fun of my diet at work 2008-11-24 10:03AM
Everybody makes fun of my diet at work, mostly because they think I'm always eating...
John McCain and the Internet: A dumb idea 2008-11-10 10:26AM
Back in the primaries, McCain enlisted the services of spammers. I got some badly targeted emails that were clearly oriented towards military veterans... and the email address for the person I think he thought he had wasn't a veteran, nor am I. I filled out the form on his website and said that I was planning on voting for anybody but him. Clearly nobody read those forms, because I got a few emails to the address I gave there, too. Calling somebody part of the "McCain Community" is about as offensive as overusing the phrase "My friends". I am neither.
The election 2008-11-05 11:59AM
For the first time in years, I've been actually happy to vote for president.
In LC order... 2008-10-20 12:14AM
'm organizing my books in LCC order (This is the way books are filed in the Library of Congress... and it's LC not LoC) There's good reasons for this. Largely because it's a more modern design than Dewey decimal but also because the people who run the modern Dewey Decimal system are generally douchebags and really want you to have to pay to get access to enough information to actually properly shelve books in order without using an external reference...
The fiscal system for nerds, Part III: Buying a chunk of a business 2008-10-17 10:24AM
So far we've talked about the cash cycle and how to make it work faster by borrowing money from a bank. But there's another way to get money. See, when you borrow money, you need to make payments on it. Which requires that you have money. But maybe you want to make money with other people's money even though you don't have much money of your own....
Rent on Video and Spring Awakening 2008-10-12 09:04PM
On seeing a recording of the last Rent show and seeing Spring Awakening.
The fiscal system for nerds, Part II: How business borrows money 2008-10-01 10:53AM
The way financing works is that you make an educated guess about how likely somebody is to pay you back and make sure that on the average you are right...
The fiscal system for nerds, Part I: The Cash Cycle 2008-09-30 12:32AM
It turns out that I've read enough and written enough financial software that I actually can grasp the big picture here from all the details. And I figured that, given some questions I've heard from friends and the current fiscal crisis, I should put fingers to keyboard and write a little about how it all fits together. I'm not going to write about how you should make money... I'm just going to explain where things come from and how the big pieces of the system work.
